To generate support for civil rights legislation proposed by President Kennedy, more than 200,000 demonstrators marched down the Mall in Washington D.C. and gathered before the Lincoln Memorial for the largest civil rights demonstration in the nation’s history. Martin Luther delivered his famous “I have a dream” speech at this demonstration.
