Other Years

Paul & JohnLast spring we woke up the echoes for Paul Schmidt, recalling WABC’s principal of the year election in 1964 and the famous un-stuffed Rutgers ballot box prank. Paul modestly deflected the credit to John Laviere as the brains behind this not-so-Ocean’s-11-like caper. Well, the smiling petit larcenists at left are none other than Paul and John holding the very ballot boxes with which Rutgers students had hoped to elect their own dean rather than Pres. Goheen. (Many of you have recalled the campaign, complete with our own “Vote Goheen” ballot boxes at the entrance of the U-Store and even telephone solicitations for votes at home.) John is still amused to this day that the dynamic duo, having so artlessly purloined the 1000-odd signed and stamped ballots, had no idea what to do with them and just held them till Election Day passed.

John, who has “no plans to retire,” continues at the helm of his family’s jet engine and power generation manufacturing business in Connecticut. His and Corky’s seven children have presented them with 14 grandchildren so far and they couldn’t be enjoying their extended family more.
