Classmates remain very active in government and foreign affairs. Dick Erdman wrote that he is now deputy director for Eastern Europe at the Dept. of State, working with Steve Oxman, who is now confirmed as assistant secretary of state for European and Canadian affairs. Also in Washington, D.C., at the Brookings Institution is Harry Harding who has authored several books on China and U.S-Chinese relations.
Steve Kerr has taken two trips to Russia during the fall of 1993 to study various aspects of the educational system, which left him both hopeful and depressed. Steve writes that the reasons for depression are obvious: collapsing institutions, cynicism, nation fascism. Reasons for hope more subtle, but nonetheless real many people realizing they have to take initiative, and try to construct a new system. Steve notes some interesting new private schools and higher education centers seem to be growing.
John Klayman ended a lifetime of bachelorhood on Mar. 13, 1993, with marriage to Susan Neal: I have acquired an instant family: 10- and 14- year-old girls and a weird dog. Im still working at I.B.M. as a data networking specialist. Greetings to all my roommates.
News from two more tuition payers: Peter Holzers daughter Jessica is a member of the Class of 1997. Peter says that she is finding freshman year to be a lot less scary than I did. Robert Chilstroms son Per is also a 97er: As I reflect upon it, this is the ultimate in family planning i.e., to share major reunion years with your progeny.
Remember our class dinner Mar. 10 at the Princeton Club in N.Y.C.
I am saddened to report the death of Perry Haines Jan. 6, 1994.
