Other Years

by Peter Safir

I received lengthy and thoughtful letters from both Class of ’95 recipients of the Class of 1967 Scholarship. They reflect the changes at PU. since we left and ’95ers’ perceptions of us. Alexander H. Dyer (son of Jon and a recipient for the second year in a row) believes his class has far greater freedom to interrupt their studies to resolve personal and other issues, and then return to school: “I imagine that in 1967 leaving school would not have been an option because it was not really socially acceptable and more importantly, because of the looming threat of [ . . . I believe this ever present threat to have been a major influence on many people who were young in the ’60s, including those who did not go to fight.] belief is perhaps why I find my father and those in his generation to be more open minded and understanding to those in my generation than those of the generation five years older and even of those of the generation ten years younger. The members of the Class of 1967 seem to be a generation caught between the ‘Father Knows Best’ 1950s and the ‘free love’ late 1960s.”

The second recipient is Jason Holley: “I am writing to express my gratitude for your generous support of my undergraduate education at Princeton. I understand that the Princeton you attended was full of activism and student action; I think that may be the affinity which the Financial Aid Office found between us. I understand that my responsibility – which has encouraged me to grow in so many ways – involves calling upon Princeton itself and fellow students to grow and expand in new ways as well. To that end, I have worked extensively with the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Alliance…as its President last year and with the Rain Forest Conservancy, also as President…My studies at Princeton will make it possible for me to go on to graduate school, and eventually to enter into Education. I am committed to beginning an incredibly high quality secondary or post-secondary school in my home state, West Virginia.”
