FOR THE THIRD YEAR in a row, the St. Louis dancing doctors won top honors in the countrys largest and one of the most prestigious dance competitions. Through the magic of e-mail, we learn that Dr. Fred Chu and wife Dr. Anita Chu won the top male and female student category recently at the 21st annual Ohio Star Ball in Columbus, Ohio. (Photo with permission of Dore Studios, New Smyrna Beach, Fla.) With an estimated 12,000 entries, the competition attracted professional and amateur dancers from throughout North America. The Chus practice 15-20 hours a week, working on 23 types of dances, such as the mambo, tango, waltz, and fox trot. In 1994, Anita persuaded Fred to learn how to dance. They were busy with their careers hes an ophthalmologist, shes a neurologist. They also wanted more time together. They won their first dance competition that year. Months later, Fred was diagnosed with colon cancer. Despite surgery and chemotherapy, he continued dancing and winning competitions. Dancing is a great thing, Fred said. Nothing is better than dancing with your wife. Fred and Anitas daughter Melinda was recently admitted to Princeton via early decision. Among those joining Melinda in the Class of 03 will be Katie Prentke.
Thirty-five years ago, we were getting our first taste of final exams and wondering why we didnt set aside a little more time during Christmas vacation for studying, a question we continued to ask for the following three years.
