Tom & Bob’s First Letter

November 2006

Dear Classmate:

We have never seen such early excitement about an upcoming major reunion. Perhaps that’s not totally a surprise. Why? Because we have been communicating with each other like never before. And it’s exciting to have received all the feedback from classmates.

As you read through this letter, you’ll see that your suggestions, praise, and yes, constructive criticisms and witticisms, have not only been heard, but acted upon.

But first, a word to those who have been away too long. We’ve been hearing from many of you, and one of the questions most frequently asked can be summed up as “How do I do Reunions?” The answer, just come. We’ll take care of all the rest.

Need a costume? We’ll help you. Need a place to stay? We’re giving you the information in plenty of time to make a booking. Need anything? Still concerned? Just contact one of the co-reunion Chairmen, Tom Amato or Bob Mayer. We’re ready and willing, along with the rest of the Reunion Committee, to make sure we do everything possible to make your 40th memorable and fun.

Headliners: Exclusive ’67 forums culminating in final Friday afternoon forum with ’67 trustees Steve Oxman and Dubby Wynne with Provost Christopher Eisgruber ’83, “Princeton in the Next Decade,” a discussion of where Princeton is today and will be by our 50th Reunion. More details follow later in the letter.

Let’s get right to what you need to know, starting with what’s new and different.

The Site and Headquarters

For the first time, we’ll be in Dod-McCormick Courtyard. If you can find the Art Museum, you can find our site.

Headquarters will be ably managed by Pepper Pettit and a hand-picked crew of Princeton students.

As in past years, the supply of on-campus beds is limited. If you want to stay in the dorms, be sure to sign up early. There is a limit of 4 beds to any one family.

Meals

We’ll be starting with Thursday dinner at the Boathouse, with the always popular clambake. Here’s the full line-up:

  • Thursday Dinner - Boathouse
  • Friday Reception and Class Dinner - Jadwin Lobby (Class Blazers and Ties Requested)
  • Saturday Reception and Dinner - Graduate School Tent
  • Sunday Brunch - Mestres Hall, Mathey College
  • All other meals, including the pre P-Rade lunch on Saturday, will be at the Dod-McCormick site

Ted and Laura Todd, our able food and beverage team, have been working to make our dining experience special, and have been especially alert to the requests and suggestions of the class.

A few words about the venues. While the Boathouse remains ever popular, and is a great reason to get to Princeton Thursday evening, our 2 new dinner sites, Jadwin and the Graduate College, should make for special evenings.

In fact, at the Graduate College, we’ve scored a bit of a coup. You can see the university fireworks from this location, so those of you who would just like to linger after dinner and have a couple more glasses of wine, can enjoy the show without moving more than a few steps.

Of course, for those who want to be “up close and personal” with the action, shuttles will be available to take you.

Finally, please let us know when you fill out the registration forms of any special dietary needs you or your family will have during Reunions.

’67 Special Forums

This was a special and almost unanimous request from the original “Tiger Tracker” survey done some months ago. The class wanted to have a few ’67 centric sessions that were relevant to our lives and times. Your committee charged Frank Strasburger to spearhead the effort.

Frank has also taken on the role of our representative on the Alumni Faculty Forum committee, so we can coordinate both efforts.

Having received input from many classmates, we’re happy to report that Friday afternoon will now be a wonderful chance to share experiences and learn more about Princeton, and hopefully ourselves.

These forums will all be held in the classroom area in McCosh and McCormick, with the final forum in the lecture hall, McCormick 101.

  • Friday, 3-4p Forum 1 - Giving Back - Using Your Gifts to Help Others
  • Friday, 3-4p Forum 2 - The Multi-Generational Family - How Do We Manage?
  • Friday, 4:15-5:15 Forum 3 - Princeton in the Next Decade with ’67 trustees Oxman, Wynne, and Provost Eisgruber

We plan to have all these sessions moderated by our classmates. We have considerable expertise and experience out there in ’67 land, and of course we look for any volunteers who might want to help out or provide input.

You would pick one of the early sessions to attend, and then the whole class would come together at 4:15 for the final Forum.

We are very pleased to announce that our own ’67 University Trustees, Steve Oxman and Dubby Wynne, have agreed to moderate the “Princeton in the Next Decade” ... where will the university be at our 50th Reunion. They’ll be joined by Chris Eisgruber, University Provost, the second highest-ranking member of Princeton’s leadership team.

What an afternoon this will be, ’67 only and another chance to share experiences with old and new friends.

Entertainment

Lanny Springs has already outdone himself for the dancing denizens of our class, or just plain music lovers.

  • Thursday - A special night of DJ music from the WOWS encyclopedic catalogue of great tunes. Could there be Karaoke?
  • Friday - The Fabulous Grease Band, America’s Rock ’n Roll Party Band
  • Saturday - The Fantastic Waller Family, known as one of the great dance bands with three truly exceptional lead vocalists and a repertoire to match.

Throughout the weekend, expect some wonderful performances by Princeton’s legendary singing groups.

Reunion Outfits

The award winning theme “Clear the Track” continues with our blazers and other uniform items staying the same. It’s the railroad theme reminiscent of the PJ+B, Princeton Junction and Back shuttle.

Tim Tulenko will be able to help classmates, their wives, children, and anyone else who needs uniform assistance.

In honor of our 40th, Tim has designed a new addition to our outfits that’s sure to be a big hit. It’s a vest, created in both men and women’s sizes, and tailored out of the same material as our blazers.

Too hot for the blazer, just want to stay a little more casual, the Clear the Track vest will be the answer.

You can find a picture of the vest in the order area at the end of this letter.

These vests are priced to move, gentlemen. $35 for the first vest, $50 for “his and her”, that is 2 vests, if you put the order in now. That’s 2 vests for the low, low price of $50.

Haven’t been to Reunions Lately

Thanks to the generosity of one of our classmates, and his desire to have more people come to the 40th, a free vest will be available to a group of classmates who sign up early.

The first 67 classmates that did not attend either the 30th or 35th reunions, that sign up for the 40th will each receive a free vest.

Further incentive to Clear the Track and come back for ’67’s 40th!

The P-Rade

We’ve won awards before and we’ll probably do it again, because Tom Tulenko is already hard at work on bringing our “Clear the Track” theme alive again as we march through campus. You’ll hear more about this as we get closer to Reunions ’07.

Housing

As mentioned earlier, there are a limited number of beds available on campus. These are strictly available on a first-come, first-served basis. The fee is $100 per bed, whether you stay 1, 2, or 3 nights. See more details on the housing form that follows.

Also enclosed is a list of Princeton vicinity inns, hotels and motels for your use. The class has found that over the years, classmates prefer to make their own reservations and plans. Thus we are not holding blocks of rooms at this time. We suggest making your reservations early.

Should you encounter any problems please contact the housing chairman, Bob Lem.

Childcare

Although a great majority of our children are older, if you need childcare, one of the nicest developments in recent years has been the YWCA Princeton Tiger Camp, a two night program designed to offer your child a safe, fun, and caring environment while you are able to enjoy your reunion.

There are pre-school, infants, and school age children’s groups up to 12 years old.

We do not at this writing have the ’07 prices, but ’06 prices were $160 if registered by April 1, and $195 up to May 1, and available based on bookings after that. You should deal directly with the YWCA in contracting for these services. Their direct contact number is (609) 497-2100 ext 334.

Class Project

The generous contributions of classmates continue to make our undergraduate summer internship program at non-profit organizations around the country a success. Peter Holzer administers this program and coordinates our efforts with the University.

The Internship Program will continue to be ’67’s main focus through the 40th.

Tiger Tracker

Some time ago, we fielded a survey, the first step in our new Tiger Tracker relationship program. Concerned classmates felt that there was a need to talk to every classmate about their needs, about how they felt, and about what it would take to have everyone come back to Princeton for the 40th.

Now we know that the whole class can’t come back. Personal and family responsibilities, distance, and other issues will necessarily keep some of you away.

But our Tiger Tracker program is reaching out and we are learning an awful lot of important things about our class, ourselves and the value of relationships.

We sent a mass email to a number of classmates who have been at reunions in recent years, asking them to contact friends and old roommates, old teammates, or old clubmates whom they may not have seen in some time.

The results have been terrific to date. Over 40 classmates have become official Tiger Trackers, resulting in contacts being made to more than 200 classmates.

If you have not been contacted yet, you will be.

In fact, why not become a Tiger Tracker? Just email or call Bob Mayer, and he will provide you with the names and numbers, and email addresses you need to help urge classmates to attend the 40th.

And it’s easy. We are only asking people to call between 5 and 8 classmates. In fact the next item in the Reunion planning came directly as a result of Tiger Tracker.

Quiet Places

Sounds obvious, quiet places to meet and talk, build new relationships and renew old ones. But we’re making sure for the 40th that these places actually exist. The University has taken an active interest in helping us secure these spaces, as they think this is a good idea.

In a future letter, we’ll have more information on these “conversations centers”. In addition, Princeton will give us a list of new spots on campus that we may not have been aware of, like the Frist Center, that are open late, are relatively near our site, and provide a quieter atmosphere for conversation.

The Survey

Dick Prentke is coordinating a 40th Reunion Class Survey. The results will be available in your check-in package next May. You’ll hear more about this effort later.

Scholarships

Over the years, we realize that financial needs change. As we have done in the past, a Reunion Scholarship Fund has been established. If you want to attend the 40th and some financial assistance would be helpful, please contact Frank Strasburger or Tom Amato.

Your information will be strictly confidential. The important thing is that you come and join your classmates for this important event.

Class Memorial Service: To be held Friday, June 1 at 11:30 am

Princeton’s Main Reunion Site: You may also find additional information on Princeton’s overall reunion site http://alumni.princeton.edu/main/goinback/reunions/reunions_2007/

Note: This is not the ’67 site for online registration.

Registration

’67 continues to hold the line on pricing. We have been careful with the class treasury and we know that Reunions can be a major expense.

Our fee for Reunions will remain the same as the 30th and the 35th.

  • Classmate $367
  • Spouse/Significant Other 225
  • Children 75

These prices remain in effect through February 28, 2007

Starting March 1, the prices will be as follows:

  • Classmate $415
  • Spouse/Significant Other $275
  • Children $75

Online Registration is Easy and Recommended

Just go to our class website at http://princeton67.com to get the latest news on our 40th. By following the easy instructions, you will be able to access web pages that are available only to classmates. There you may register online and even find out who else has registered. Because we must secure this information it is password protected. Your TigerNet email address and Alumni Council ID (printed above your name on the PAW) is required to get a password. In case you do not know (or have) one or the other or both, the website offers ways to determine them in a confidential way. Webmaster’s note: Online registration will not be available.

Of course, enclosed are the usual sign-up forms for those who wish to register that way.

So sign up early, make all your reservations, and take the express train to Princeton for ’67’s 40th.

For the Great Class of ’67,

Tom Amato and Bob Mayer
